More and more focus is being put on creating a staple wardrobe, which we’re big fans of, as it helps you to create a stunning wardrobe you’ll wear and love for years, whilst also helping the environment. However, some people think that they have to spend a fortune to get it right. We’re here to prove that this isn’t the case! With our five tips, you can elevate your staple wardrobe without it having to cost a lot.
Buy Better Quality, Less Often
Our first tip is to buy better quality clothing less often. Rather than trying to quickly fill your wardrobe with poor quality pieces all at once, make a list of the things you want in your staple wardrobe, make a priority list and then start making your way through it, perhaps a piece a month, depending on your budget. This way, you’ll be buying much better quality clothes which will last so much longer and they’ll be way nicer, which is a win-win overall! All this takes is a bit of patience and it’ll also save you a lot of money in the long run.
Choose Timeless Jackets
A great way to elevate your staple wardrobe without having to buy many new things at all is to focus on buying timeless jackets. You could have the most simple outfit on in the world, like a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt, then when you throw a great coat or jacket over the top, it completely brings it to life! Whether it’s a faux-fur lined aviator jacket or long classic wool coat for the winter, or perhaps a tailored blazer or lightweight trench for the warmer months, add a few great jackets to your staple wardrobe and you’ll immediately feel a difference! Keep your base simple, add a timeless top layer, and you’ll be well on your way to elevating your staple wardrobe without having to replace everything.
Avoid Trends
One of the best things you can do to save money when it comes to your staple wardrobe is to avoid trends. Trends come and go, and you can end up spending an absolute fortune on trending pieces if you keep adding them to your wardrobe, only to end up getting to a point when you don’t wear them anymore. Instead, if you were to hold back whenever you’re influenced by a trend, and spend it on a timeless piece that’s on your list, you’ll find that you have a wardrobe full of pieces that you wear and love season after season, and year after year, for a long time. Again, this also frees up more budget to spend on your better quality pieces!
Whilst not all trends have the same shelf life, it’s something to be aware of when you’re shopping. A good way to look at a trend is to consider whether this is a temporary desire or a real need. Having a list of your priorities when it comes to your staple wardrobe, and making sure the items are on there for at least 3-6 months before purchasing, will also help you identify whether or not a trend impulse buy will be worth it when you have plenty of other things in the pipeline!

Buy Second Hand
Something that definitely shouldn’t be overlooked is buying your staple wardrobe pieces second hand. Whether it’s charity shopping or second hand sites online, you’re almost guaranteed to find what you’re looking for somewhere out there! Second hand clothes can often have a misconception of not being great quality, however in reality, it’s often the opposite. People get rid of clothes for all kinds of reasons, and you can absolutely find brand new or near new clothes that will fit seamlessly into your wardrobe. Plus, you’ll pay a fraction of the full price!
You can also usually access much better quality items that you may have been able to at full price, for example a nice thick denim jacket from Levi’s that you will keep for a lifetime, as opposed to a cheaper highstreet version that you replace every couple of years. Before you buy anything new, take a look at whether you can find it second hand and you can save so much money as a result.
Consider Your Accessories Carefully
Another great way to elevate your staple wardrobe from more simple looks to another level is by choosing your accessories carefully. Get yourself a lovely belt, scarf, pair of sunglasses, shoulder bag and larger handbag, then you’ll instantly see any outfit come straight to life. The same goes with shoes, we love polished flats, knee high boots, plain white trainers and Chelsea boots for a good selection.
You can’t forget your jewellery as well, from your simple and dainty flat back earrings through to your statement gold hoops and layering necklaces. All of these things add up to transform your look, so don’t underestimate them when it comes to updating your staple wardrobe.
